NEWPORT BEAUTY EASTERN LARCH
Larix laricina Newport Beauty

A very slow growing, low mounding globose selection of tamarck with ultra-dense twiggy branching holding tiny bluish green needles. After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 12 inches (30 cm) tall and 24 inches (60 cm) wide; an annual growth rate of 1 to 2 inches (2.5 – 5 cm). This plant is reported to be prone to “SLDS” (Sudden Larch Death Syndrome) in the ACS Central Region, having a tendency to die back suddenly without reason during hot summer weather. The older the plant the more prone it is to this problem. This cultivar originated as a witch’s broom seedling selected in 1988 by Dr. Sidney Waxman
