Here is a slow growing, member of the Cypress family that is both elegant and unusual. It is the Weeping threadleaf arborvitae, or Thuja occidentalis ‘Filiformis’. Arborvitaes are old garden favorites that arouse little notice these days though they remain a bulwark of permanency in garden design. The Weeping threadleaf arborvitae however has a totally different texture and form. Its branches are stranded, and arching, which produces a wonderful mop-head cascade. This weeping foliage is grown on a compact, conical shrub or small tree that grows to 10 feet in height.
